The different types of child custody arrangements

    • Legal custody.

Legal custody refers to the authority to make decisions about the child on their behalf. These decisions may be regarding their education, healthcare, religious upbringing, etc. Legal custody may be awarded to one or both parents, depending on the child’s best interests.

When parents have joint legal custody, they collaborate to make decisions about their children. This requires effective communication and is only possible when the parents can be civil with each other. Sole legal custody means only one parent, the mother or the father, has the authority to make decisions about the child.

    • Physical custody.

Physical custody is awarded to the parent with whom the child lives. The parent with the physical custody of the child is responsible for their day-to-day care and general well-being, such as food, clothing, education, health, celebrow etc.

The child spends most of their time with the parent with sole custody and less time with the other parent. In joint physical custody cases, the child spends equal time with both parents. In joint custody, the parents work together to provide their children with their basic needs.

    • Grandparents’ visitation rights.

After a divorce, grandparents may seek visitation rights to spend time with their grandchildren. However, these rights are not automatically granted. It usually depends on whether the custodial parent allows the grandparents to meet the child.

In some cases, the grandparents may legally seek custody of the child if they believe the parent is unable to take care of them. To do this, they must show that they have a close and loving relationship with their grandchild. Several other factors are also considered to ensure the child’s best allworldday interests.
